Paper, foam, plaster: the life of a study model

Our models are not presentation pieces. They are tools for thinking with our hands, and most of them end up in the bin.

On an average week the studio builds between twenty and forty models. Almost none of them survive. They are made in minutes, cut from white card or carved from foam, and thrown away as soon as they have answered a question.

Three scales

At 1:500 we test massing against the neighbours. At 1:50 we study how light enters a single room. At 1:5 we look at a joint, a handrail or the edge of a step, often in the real material.

“A model tells you the truth faster than any rendering ever will.”

We photograph every model outside, in daylight, at the latitude of the site whenever we can. It is the cheapest and most honest way we know to see a building before it exists.
